Eurochambres remind that the EU only emits between 7% and 9% of the world's CO₂

Mr. Vladimír Dlouhý, President of Eurochambes, at Forum Europa

The President of Eurochambres, Vladimír Dlouhý, denounced this Tuesday at the Forum Europa in Brussels that many businesspeople do not understand why the EU has the most restrictive legislation on climate and are in the center of the target when the continent only emits between 7% and 9% of the carbon dioxide of the entire planet.

Dlouhý made these statements during his participation in an event organised by the New Economy Forum in the European capital, where he explained that his organisation is not against measures such as the New European Green Deal despite the fact that on the other side of the ocean (in reference to the United States) they are not carrying out policies of the same nature.

He also warned that excessive bureaucracy could reduce the competitiveness of the European economy and regretted that our efforts to combat climate change do not matter in other emerging economies such as China or India. "The world does not care what Europe does", he lamented, citing as an example the high level of pollution experienced by metropolises such as Chennai or New Delhi while Europe applies restrictive policies.

He also warned that many climate policies, such as the restriction of combustion engines, generate great discontent among the European population, citing as an example Přísaha and Motorists, a Czech party focused on the fight against the elimination of combustion engines and the 2030 Agenda, which has obtained 10% of the vote in the European elections.

"If we fight alone, even if we do it very well, we will continue to have floods in Bohemia and Valencia, no snow in the ski resorts and very high temperatures in the Mediterranean", added Dlouhý, considering that this fight will be in vain if other parts of the world do not join in.

Finally, asked about Executive Vice-President-designate for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition and Third Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, Dlouhý celebrated that she is from Atlético de Madrid but regretted her position against nuclear energy and expressed hope that she would be able to change her mind if she is elected.
