Iratxe García, MEP and chair of the Social Democrats in the European Parliament, accused the PP on Tuesday at the Fórum Europa in Brussels of breaking the “traditional European alliance” by striking a deal with the “far right” and of using “fake news” to attack the government over the migration crisis affecting Ceuta.
García made these remarks at this briefing organised by Nueva Economía Fórum in the EU capital, where she accused the European People’s Party (EPP) of breaking the “traditional pro-European alliance” by negotiating and striking deals with the “far right”. The Socialist leader warned that there are insurmountable “red lines” when it comes to human rights and dignity, and said that if the EPP competes using the language of the far right, “we know who will win”.
She also accused the PP of using “fake news” in the migration crisis affecting Ceuta and stated that “they are using the same false narratives employed by the far right when discussing, for example, Schengen”. In this regard, she pointed out that Ceuta, like Melilla, has a specific arrangement in relation to Schengen. “They know this, but they resort to fake news to raise the issue and put the message on the table. That is the crux of the matter,” said García about the PP.
In her view, the problem arises when the People’s Party “copies the same language as the far right” and uses it “to attack vulnerable people”. He pointed out that the PP talks of an “invasion”, just as Vox does, or claims that “minors pose a danger”. “They talk about 10-year-old boys and girls crossing the sea as best they can, and they refer to them in terms of an invasion,” she insisted. She argued that this attitude on the part of the PP “only empowers the far right”.
