The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, stated this Tuesday at Forum Europa in Brussels that "we have a lot of instability on the Mediterranean coast and we have to preserve the countries that are still stable".
During a meeting organised by the New Economy Forum in the EU capital, Josep Borrell responded to a question on European policy with Morocco, its military manoeuvres near the waters off the Canary Islands and the problem of irregular immigration.
Borrell said that "we have very good relations with Morocco, at the level of the European Union" and at the level of Spain, but pointed out that "it is in our interest to continue to have a good relationship with Morocco".
The High Representative recalled that Europe is Morocco's most important trading and investment partner, and stressed its importance "in trying to accompany the country in its internal political development".
"We have a lot of instability on the Mediterranean coast", he warned, and considered that for this reason the EU needs to preserve the best relations with the countries that have this political stability. "At the moment Morocco plays a strategic role in the Middle East," he stressed, and he hoped to maintain friendly ties with the rest of Africa as well.
