The President of the European Committee of the Regions, Kata Tüttő, defended on Tuesday at the Fórum Europa in Brussels the role of socialists in the EU in the face of the “authoritarian momentum” posed by certain technologies and powers.
Tüttő made these remarks at the event organised by Nueva Economía Fórum in the EU capital, where she introduced Iratxe García, MEP and president of the Group of the Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. In this context, she encouraged socialists to continue contributing concepts such as “cohesion, solidarity and dignity” to the EU. She emphasised that these concepts must be grounded in “the social technologies and infrastructure necessary for the sustainability and political stability of the European project”.
Tüttő reflected on the importance of local politics in understanding “the universal through the local”. In his view, combining this experience with a European perspective is one of the keys to becoming a better leader.
In fact, she referred to the EU not as a centralised machine, but “as an intelligent system and a decentralised network” and emphasised that its strength lies in “cooperation, commitment and its capacity for self-correction, in contrast to the speed of authoritarian regimes”.
Finally, and in introducing Iratxe García, she emphasised the importance of female leadership in institutions, including at a European level.
