BRUSSELS, 22 February. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated this Thursday at the opening event of the Forum Europa in Brussels that the European Union needs “a real Security and Defense framework” for its strategic autonomy.
This was said by Roberta Metsola during a meeting organised by New Economy Forum in the community's capital, in which she was presented by the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nadia Calviño.
Metsola recalled the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the current conflict in Gaza and maintained that “peace cannot be taken for granted” because “we have seen how war is no longer unthinkable.”
“Europe's collective security is essential in this sense, and that is why we need a real Security and Defense framework, which does not reproduce what exists, but rather complements it,” he said. Last year, the European Union approved the 'Strategic Compass', which contemplates the creation of an EU Rapid Deployment Capability of up to 5,000 military personnel for different types of crises.
In her speech, Metsola commented on Donald Trump's recent statements saying that the United States would not help a NATO ally that did not invest enough in weapons.
For the President of the European Parliament, the EU should have begun to seek its strategic autonomy "when we saw the United States withdraw from Afghanistan", or when the weakness of some of the 27 being 100% dependent on Russian gas was seen.
“We need to create a Security Union,” she stated, “taking into account the different constitutional, military, and national neutrality realities” of each of the community partners.
