BRUSSELS, 22 February. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated this Thursday at the inaugural event of the Forum Europa in Brussels that "we cannot tell farmers that, in some way, we can make the green transition without them”.

This was said by Roberta Metsola during an event organised by New Economy Forum in the community's capital, where she was presented by the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nadia Calviño.

Metsola asserted that “the European Union has been the most influential global actor in advancing the international agenda on decarbonization and the fight against climate change”, but added that “people must have confidence in the process, they must be able to allow it, otherwise we won’t be able to do it.”

At a moment when farmers from all over Europe, as well as Spain, went out onto the highways to protest about the difficulties posed by EU regulations, and the difficult profitability of their businesses, the President said that “in the matter of agriculture specifically, we need to find a balance between ensuring that our farmers can feed our continent and ensuring their means of life and their children's, and, at the same time, saving our planet”.

After explaining that she travels to each of the 27 countries not only to speak to the authorities, but to talk to young people and professionals, she added that she also meets farmers “with different individual demands and frustrations that we must be able to understand”.

Metsola sustained that “we can’t go from asking for their help four years ago when the pandemic happened, only to tell them, four years later, that in some way we can make the green transition without them”.

“Even if we are proud of our successes, we must also be honest about where we can improve and where we have gone too slow and too fast,” she said.
